Advances reduce the risk of glenoid component failure following total shoulder replacement
Three developments — 3-D preoperative planning, patient-specific instrumentation and 3-D printing — have greatly increased the accuracy of glenoid component placement and improved the likelihood of optimal outcomes in complicated cases.

Optimal treatment varies for displaced and unstable distal radius fractures
The goal of treatment is to restore the previous level of function with minimal risk, but the appropriate treatment may vary, depending on the patient's age and activity level, existing medical conditions, bone quality, and amount of displacement.


SIJ re-emerges as a known source of low back pain
Current studies suggest sacroiliac joint (SIJ) involvement in 15 to 30 percent of patients with low back pain and a much higher prevalence in patients who have undergone lumbar fusion procedures, whether or not the fusion involves the sacrum.

Survival rates for pediatric bone cancer improve dramatically
Advances including adjuvant chemotherapy regimens, improved imaging and custom implants have improved the five-year survival rate for local pediatric bone cancers to 60 to 80 percent.
