Metformin remains the treatment of choice for patients with T2DM
Metformin continues to dominate as an oral therapeutic agent for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), both as monotherapy and in combination with other medications. Yet after 50 years, its mechanism of action isn't fully understood.

Survival rates for pediatric bone cancer improve dramatically
Advances including adjuvant chemotherapy regimens, improved imaging and custom implants have improved the five-year survival rate for local pediatric bone cancers to 60 to 80 percent.

Advances reduce the risk of glenoid component failure after total shoulder replacement
Three developments — 3-D preoperative planning, patient-specific instrumentation and 3-D printing — have greatly increased the accuracy of glenoid component placement and improved the likelihood of optimal outcomes in complicated cases.


SIJ re-emerges as a known source of low back pain
Current studies suggest sacroiliac joint (SIJ) involvement in 15 to 30 percent of patients with low back pain and a much higher prevalence in patients who have undergone lumbar fusion procedures, whether or not the fusion involves the sacrum.

Scenscent cell removal increases mice life spans
Researchers genetically engineered mice to kill senescent cells in response to a particular drug. The mice ate a fat-rich diet and were dosed with the drug. Measurement showed the mice carried 60 percent less plaque in major arteries than did other mice.
