Chronic subthreshold stimulation of the cortex suppresses seizures successfully

Gene mutation a potential risk factor for late-onset Alzheimer's disease in African-Americans
Researchers conducting the first comprehensive genetic screening in African-Americans for variants in known Alzheimer's genes discovered a likely pathogenic PSEN2 gene variant that has not been found in other populations with late-onset Alzheimer's.

Clinical trial tests immunotherapy to prevent Alzheimer's disease
The A4 Study, a clinical trial for older individuals at risk of Alzheimer's disease, aims to prevent the memory loss associated with Alzheimer's. Some participants receive antibodies that target unwanted excess proteins to counteract degenerative changes in the brain.

Research

Adult stem cells travel to International Space Station
Researchers at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, sent donated adult stem cells into space to help determine whether the cells, which are derived from the body's bone marrow, can be more quickly mass-produced in microgravity and used to treat strokes.

Improved glioma classification system tests for genetic mutations
Results of a study of the classification of genetic alterations common to gliomas indicate that molecular methods can do a better job than current methods of predicting which specific treatment course is necessary for each individual patient.

SRS provides better quality of life for some patients with brain tumors
Research indicates that patients with three or fewer metastatic brain tumors who received treatment with stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) had less cognitive deterioration three months after treatment than did patients who received SRS combined with whole-brain radiation therapy.
