Oral appliances can improve important outcomes in selected patients with more severe obstructive sleep apnea. Innovations include compliance recorders to help in long-term follow-up and emerging technologies to remotely adjust the appliance to optimize upper airway patency.

Maxillomandibular advancement surgery treats obstructive sleep apnea effectively
Maxillomandibular advancement surgery should be considered for any patient with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea, if surgical management is desired. At Mayo Clinic, more than half of patients with obstructive sleep apnea achieve elimination (apnea-hypopnea index less than 5).

Hypoglossal nerve stimulation therapy helps patients with obstructive sleep apnea
Activation of the genioglossus muscle via stimulation of the hypoglossal nerve is a new approach for treatment of obstructive sleep apnea. In a 2014 study, stimulation was associated with a 68 percent reduction in the apnea-hypopnea index.

New neurovascular techniques expand treatment options for patients with intracranial aneurysms
Mayo Clinic neurovascular specialists manage complex intracranial aneurysms successfully — with low morbidity and low mortality — through the use of treatment modalities such as extracranial to intracranial bypass, coiling, stenting and microvascular procedures.


Direct anterior approach total hip arthroplasty improves patient recovery time
Researchers found that patients who underwent direct anterior approach (DAA) total hip arthroplasty had objectively faster recovery than patients who had mini-posterior approach. Functional milestones occurred about five days earlier for patients with DAA.

Lung cancer tumor board meetings broadcast live
The multidisciplinary assembly provides up-to-date treatment options for patients with lung cancer, explores enrollment in clinical trials, and enhances cross-discipline education from the exchange of information and expert opinion. Meetings are broadcast live to Mayo Clinic Care Network members.
