Patient Care

Cardiac sarcoidosis underdiagnosed in patients with systemic sarcoidosis
Specialists at Mayo Clinic's Cardiac Sarcoidosis Clinic collaborate to provide innovative approaches to the diagnosis and management of patients with suspected or clinically definite cardiac sarcoidosis. Research suggests the rate of cardiac sarcoidosis in that population is 25 percent.

Robotic approach to mitral valve repair: Mayo Clinic experience
Robotic repair of mitral valve regurgitation related to leaflet prolapse (degenerative mitral valve disease) allows for a faster recovery time and shorter hospital stays. In the minimally invasive approach, several small incisions are made by sternotomy or thoracotomy.

Behavior modification in treatment of atrial fibrillation
Recent studies have shown that behavior modification such as weight loss and exercise can reduce the recurrence of atrial fibrillation. Often, patients can reduce their need for invasive procedures or the number of overall procedures they require through behavior modification.

How to assess and manage stroke risk in atrial fibrillation
Approximately 20 percent of stokes are cardioembolic. Specialists discuss the CHA2DS2-VASc scoring system commonly used to determine which patients have a high enough stroke risk to warrant treatment, other etioloigies for stroke and the management of stroke risk.

Research

Challenges remain in patient selection and procedural planning in left atrial appendage occlusion
Research published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings indicates that left atrial appendage occlusion offers an alternative for stroke prevention in patients with an elevated stroke risk who have a rationale for avoiding long-term oral anticoagulation.
